HeyGen is the most realistic AI avatar platform you can buy without a sales call, and its 175-language video translation is excellent value at 6 credits a minute. The catch is credit pricing: $29 Creator buys about 150 minutes on Avatar III but only about 12.5 minutes on the flagship Avatar V. Worth it for creators, marketers and localization teams. Overpriced if you need hours of top-quality avatar video every month.
This HeyGen review 2026 covers what you actually get: the plans, the credit math, the features that matter, and where it falls short. Every price comes from HeyGen’s own pages, checked October 2026.
HeyGen is the AI avatar platform most people try first. It turns a script into a talking-presenter video, clones you from about 30 seconds of footage, and translates existing video into 175+ languages.

TL;DR: HeyGen review 2026 verdict
HeyGen makes the most convincing personal avatars on any self-serve plan, and its lip-synced video translation is the best value in the product. The weak spot is credits: the realistic Avatar V model costs 12 times as much per minute as Avatar III.
- Best for: creators, marketers, sales teams and anyone localizing existing video
- Price: Free, then $29/month Creator, $49/month Pro, $149/month Business
- Real cost per avatar minute: about $0.19 (Avatar III) to $2.32 (Avatar V) on Creator
- Standout: Avatar V realism and 175-language translation from 6 credits a minute
- Biggest catch: hard-to-predict credit burn and 1080p export on Creator
- Score: 4.3 out of 5
What is HeyGen?
HeyGen is an AI video platform for creators and business teams that turns text into avatar-led video and translates real video into 175+ languages, from $29/month. It started as a talking-avatar tool and now covers prompt-to-video, voice, and developer APIs.
HeyGen — AI avatar video, translation and prompt-to-video in one studio
The pitch is on the homepage: “AI videos starring you, made in minutes.” You record yourself once, and HeyGen generates new videos of you from text.
Scale is real. HeyGen says it serves 100,000+ businesses, and its homepage cites SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA compliance.
Users mostly agree it works. HeyGen holds 4.2 out of 5 on Trustpilot from 4,831 reviews, and 4.7 out of 5 on Capterra (checked October 2026).
The 13% of Trustpilot reviews that give one star cluster around the same two complaints: credits and support. More on both below.
HeyGen pricing: plans, credits and what you actually pay
HeyGen has four Studio plans plus Enterprise. All paid plans offer yearly billing with “2 months free”.
HeyGen’s Free, Creator and Pro plans, checked October 2026
| Plan | Price | Credits/month | Max video length | Export | Custom avatars |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not credit-based | 1 min (3 videos/month, watermarked) | Watermarked | 1 |
| Creator | $29/month (about $24 billed yearly) | 600 | 30 min | 1080p | 1+ |
| Pro | From $49/month | From 1,000 | 30 min | 4K | 1+ |
| Business | $149/month + $20 per added seat | 1,500 | 60 min | 4K | 5+ |
| Enterprise | Custom | Set to usage | No maximum | 4K | 10+ |
Source: HeyGen pricing, checked October 2026. Pro scales up to 100,000 credits a month at $4,300.
Unused credits roll over one month on monthly billing. On yearly billing they accumulate until renewal.
What you actually pay per minute
The plan price is only half the answer. The avatar model you pick sets how fast credits drain, and the rates come from HeyGen’s credit usage guide.
| What you make | Credits per minute | Minutes on Creator (600) | Cost per minute, Creator monthly | Cost per minute, Creator yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar III, video look | 4 | 150 | About $0.19 | About $0.16 |
| Avatar IV, photo look | 16 | 37.5 | About $0.77 | About $0.64 |
| Avatar IV, video look | 31 | About 19 | About $1.50 | About $1.24 |
| Avatar V | 48 | 12.5 | About $2.32 | About $1.92 |
| Video translation, no lip-sync | 4 | 150 | About $0.19 | About $0.16 |
| Translation with lip-sync, Speed | 6 | 100 | About $0.29 | About $0.24 |
| Translation with lip-sync, Precision | 10 | 60 | About $0.48 | About $0.40 |
| Video Agent, Standard | 80 | 7.5 | About $3.87 | About $3.20 |
Our math, from HeyGen’s published credit rates and plan grants.
Two things jump out. Translation is cheap, and Avatar V is not.
Pro is barely cheaper per credit than Creator ($0.049 vs $0.048). You pay the extra $20 for 4K, Seedance and Cinematic Avatars, not for cheaper minutes.
Business costs about $0.10 per credit, twice Creator’s rate. It buys seats, collaboration and 60-minute videos.
Which HeyGen plan should you buy?
Free is a test drive. Three 1-minute watermarked videos a month are enough to judge your custom avatar, not to publish.
Creator is the right plan for most solo creators. 600 credits cover 150 minutes on Avatar III or about 100 minutes of lip-synced translation, and 30-minute videos are allowed.
Pro makes sense when you need 4K, full Avatar V access or Seedance. Pick the credit tier from your monthly Avatar V minutes: 1,000 credits buy about 20 of them.
Business is for teams that need shared workspaces and 60-minute videos. Budget per seat, not per plan.
Take yearly billing only after a month on monthly. Credits accumulate on yearly plans, but you are locked in if the avatar quality doesn’t suit your content.
HeyGen API pricing
The API is billed separately from Studio plans. It runs pay-as-you-go from a $5 prepaid wallet, with no subscription.
HeyGen’s own pricing breakdown lists per-second rates: $0.0167 for an Avatar III digital twin, $0.05 for an Avatar IV photo avatar, and $0.0667 for Avatar V. That works out to about $1, $3 and $4 a minute.
Free monthly API credits ended in February 2026. Pay-as-you-go credits expire after 12 months, and self-serve accounts get 10 concurrent renders, per HeyGen’s API pricing guide.
API minutes cost more than Studio minutes. Avatar III is about $1 a minute through the API against about $0.19 inside a Creator plan.
HeyGen key features
Avatar V and personal avatars
Avatar V is HeyGen’s flagship model. It keeps your identity consistent across angles, expressions and videos, with phoneme-level lip-sync and upper-body gestures.
You record about 30 seconds of video to camera and read an on-camera consent statement. Most avatars are ready in 10 to 20 minutes, and one avatar can wear up to 500 outfits and settings.
Creator gets Avatar V with “limited usage”. Pro gets it in full, plus first access to new models.
Stock avatars and photo avatars
The Free plan includes 500+ ready-made presenters, and the full library tops 1,100. Photo avatars animate a single still image, at 7 credits a minute on Avatar III or 16 on Avatar IV.
Video translation
HeyGen’s video translator: upload a file or paste a YouTube link
This is HeyGen’s best feature for the money. Upload a video or paste a YouTube link, pick a language, and HeyGen translates the speech, clones the voice and re-syncs the lips.
Paid plans cover 175+ languages and dialects, while Free covers 30+. Pro adds editing of the translated script before render.
If translation is your main job, compare it with dedicated tools in our roundup of AI video dubbing tools and our guide to AI dubbing with lip-sync.
Video Agent
Video Agent drafts a full video from a text prompt: script, scenes, avatar and motion graphics. Elements stay editable after generation.
It is the priciest feature at 80 credits a minute in Standard mode and 240 in Seedance mode. Use it for drafts, not volume.
AI Studio and voice
AI Studio is a text-based editor. You edit the script and the video follows, with Voice Director, Voice Mirroring, Gesture Control, a Brand Kit and auto captions.
HeyGen Voice handles text to speech and voice cloning across 175+ languages. Creator includes up to 10 hours of text to speech.
Pro-only extras
Pro adds 4K export, Seedance 2.5 video generation and Cinematic Avatars, which place your avatar in text-prompted scenes. It also adds Veo 3.1 and Nano Banana for video and image generation.
Security and consent
Every custom avatar needs on-camera identity verification, and HeyGen runs ML scanning to flag policy violations. Its trust page lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, CCPA, the EU AI Act and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
That covers most marketing and sales teams. Regulated buyers who need ISO certifications should check Synthesia’s stack before signing.
HeyGen pros: what it does well
- Avatar realism. Avatar V is the most lifelike personal avatar you can get without an enterprise contract, built from roughly 30 seconds of footage.
- Cheap, broad translation. 175+ languages with lip-sync from 6 credits a minute, about $0.29 on Creator.
- Fast setup. A custom avatar in 10 to 20 minutes, and one comes free on the Free plan.
- Long videos on cheap plans. 30 minutes per video on Creator, 60 on Business.
- 4K at $49. Pro exports in 4K, which most rivals reserve for enterprise.
- A real API. Pay-as-you-go from $5, with batch requests, webhooks and an MCP server for developers.
HeyGen cons: where it falls short
- Credit burn is hard to predict. Avatar V costs 48 credits a minute against 4 for Avatar III. Trustpilot reviewers repeatedly say credits run out faster than expected.
- Creator caps at 1080p. You need Pro for 4K.
- Avatar V is rationed on Creator. “Limited usage” means the flagship model is really a Pro feature.
- Support is thin. Several Trustpilot and Capterra reviewers report trouble reaching a human, including for cancellations.
- Long videos can feel repetitive. Reviewers note recurring gestures and facial patterns in avatar videos over about 10 minutes.
- Business seats add up. A five-person team pays $149 plus $80 for four extra seats, every month.
HeyGen vs alternatives
HeyGen’s closest rivals are Synthesia for corporate training and Colossyan for L&D teams that want a generous free plan.

| Starting paid price | $29/month (about $24 yearly) | $29/month ($18 yearly) | $59/month billed yearly |
| Stock avatars | 1,100+ | 125+ Starter, 240+ Enterprise | 300+ |

Who should use HeyGen?
Use HeyGen if you:
- Want an avatar that looks and moves like you, for YouTube, LinkedIn or sales outreach
- Translate existing videos into many languages and want lip-sync included
- Make short avatar videos on Avatar III or IV, where Creator credits go a long way
- Need 4K export without an enterprise contract
- Build avatar video into a product through an API
Skip HeyGen if you:
- Need hours of Avatar V footage every month on a fixed budget
- Run compliance training that needs ISO 27001 or ISO 42001 sign-off (Synthesia fits better)
- Already have real footage and only need it in another language, since an avatar replaces the real speaker you already filmed
Conclusion: is HeyGen worth it in 2026?
Yes, for the right job. HeyGen is the best self-serve choice when the avatar has to be you, and its translation is one of the cheapest lip-synced options at about $0.29 a minute.
Go in with the credit math done. Pick Avatar III or IV for volume, save Avatar V for the videos that need to pass as you, and start on Free before you pay.
Our score: 4.3 out of 5. Realism and translation earn it, while unpredictable credits and thin support hold it back.
